Fructooligosaccharide, a Potential “Calcium Supplement Partner”
It seems that calcium deficiency is a silent "popular trend", spreading in our lives. From babies who teeth late to children who are prone to colds; from adolescents slow growth to middle-aged and elderly osteoporosis; from "don't miss the critical period of calcium supplementation for infants and young children" to "it's too late to supplement calcium after the age of 30" ...…The anxiety caused by calcium deficiency spans generations and runs through almost all stages of life.
In daily life, after calcium in food enters the human body in the form of calcium salt or calcium ion complex, it is dissociated into ion form by gastric acid, first absorbed through the intestinal tract, and then transported into the bone through the blood to be absorbed. But the added calcium will not be completely absorbed by the body. Studies have found that there are two options for calcium ions to enter the human body, one is deposited in the correct part, such as teeth and bones that require calcium; the other is ectopic deposition, such as articular cartilage, blood vessels and kidneys and other tissues and organs. These erroneous deposition of calcium in turn will cause the metabolic burden of the organs, or increase the risk of stones and calcification, and then induce a series of diseases. In other words, the calcium absorbed into the blood from the intestine can only achieve the real calcium supplement effect if it is transported to the bones and fully absorbed and utilized. Therefore, in addition to seeking good calcium supplement preparations in daily life, improving the absorption and utilization of calcium is also an important way to solve calcium deficiency.
So how can we effectively promote calcium absorption?
Studies have shown that prebiotics can be selectively metabolized by cecal microorganisms because of their non-digestibility, which is important for improving human health and can promote the absorption of calcium and other minerals in the body. Among them, fructooligosaccharide (FOS) is not only a high-quality prebiotic, but also an excellent water-soluble dietary fiber. It cannot be digested and absorbed by the stomach and small intestine. After entering the large intestine, it is fermented to produce organic acids, which lowers the pH of the intestinal tract, forms an acidic environment, acidifies the lumen contents, increases the solubility of calcium, and promotes the absorption of calcium in the body.
FOS can increase intestinal calcium-binding protein levels.
Studies have shown that SCFAs produced by fructooligosaccharides may stimulate the proliferation of mucosal cells, which may be the reason for increasing the level of calcium binding protein in the large intestine, thereby further promoting calcium absorption.
A mixture of FOS and inulin improves calcium and magnesium absorption in postmenopausal women.
Holloway L. et al studied 15 healthy and free-living postmenopausal women taking inulin-containing FOS for 6 weeks through a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design, and found that a mixture of FOS and inulin can improve the absorption of calcium and magnesium minerals in postmenopausal women, which has potential benefits for bone health.
FOS can promote calcium absorption in adolescents.
Ellen GHM van den Heuve et al. studied the calcium absorption effect of daily intake of 15g fructo-oligosaccharides on male adolescents. It has been found that after daily intake of 15g FOS, the percentage of calcium absorption increased, compared with the control group. So the results showed that fructo-oligosaccharides can promote calcium absorption in adolescents.
Nowadays, there are endless calcium supplement products on the market. No matter what kind of calcium products, their main purpose is to supplement the calcium content of the body, improve the absorption and utilization of calcium, and better promote the growth of bones and teeth. Through the above discuss, it is found that fructooligosaccharide can effectively improve the absorption rate of calcium in the body, and is a very potential "calcium supplement partner". In addition, FOS is a kind of natural active substances. The content of fructo-oligosaccharides in fruits and vegetables is relatively high. The fructo-oligosaccharides in fruits and vegetables can be extracted, and its content in this kind of fructose is relatively balanced. People with high blood sugar and high blood pressure can also take it normally, and it will not cause an increase in individual blood pressure. Eating some fructooligosaccharides properly can not only improve the intestinal flora, but also help to treat intestinal diseases, and can also reduce the excretion of liver toxins.
